The Association for Transnational Higher Education Accreditation (ATHEA) was formed during a meeting and ceremony in Vienna Austria on 11 May 2015. At this meeting, the name of the organisation was finalized, the executive director was appointed, board members identified, and a strategy was outlined relative to legally establishing the association in Vienna Austria.

During the formation event, the discussion focused on the need to separate the name of the association (ATHEA) from the service provided (institutional accreditation). The participants felt strongly that it is important to keep these two identities separate and distinct to protect the image and brand of the association.
